Bakeracing #4 Championship Corvette To Be Inducted at Great Hall

Middlefield, MA    Corporate Motorsports announces that the #4 1987 Championship Corvette Escort Racer owned and raced by Kim Baker of Bakeracing will be inducted into the fourth annual 2013 Great Hall at the University of Illinois in Champaign, Illinois on June 30, 2013.

In 1986, Kim Baker and his Bakeracing team won an unprecedented four out of six racing events in the SCCA Escort Endurance Series.  Having accomplished this feat, Bakeracing was presented with the bright, yellow 1987 Corvette by Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company for use in the next year’s Series. During the 1987 Escort season, Baker went on to break his own record with the new car.  In 1987 Bakeracing dominated the series by winning 5 out of 7 races. In fact, Bakeracing won more than half, (10 out of 19), of all of the races in the SCCA Pro Endurance Series, posting more overall wins than all the other teams combined. Baker retired his 1987 Corvette an undefeated champion.

The celebrated #4 has been featured in books and magazines, the program cover, official t-shirt and poster for the 1987 Fall Sebring Classic, Goodyear ads, the cover of the Bilstein 1988 calendar, Redline Oil poster advertisement, in 2003 was chosen by Racer Magazine, as being one of the top 10 most significant race cars in 50 years of Corvette history and in the same year was featured at Chevy Vetttefest in Chicago, and chosen as #35 Chip’s Choice at Corvettes of Carlisle.

Baker is a Multi-National Championship winner in multiple racing series, responsible for driver, team, tire manufacturer, and automobile manufacturer championships. His internationally renowned racing record includes setting a 24- hour world speed record on the seven–mile oval at the Firestone Proving Grounds as a team driver with Corvette; numerous top three finishes in NASCAR (Busch East) including a win at the Pepsi 150, Watkins Glen International Speedway; voted “One of Ten Most Influential Men In Corvette History” by Road & Track Magazine; and the winner of the Bilstein Madonna Award for Racing Excellence, which is one of the highest international honors one can receive in motorsports.  Along with his on track achievements, Baker is recognized for his success as a team owner, crew chief, engine builder, and philanthropist. Baker continues to race and now markets historical race cars through his website, www.vintageracecarsales.com

The famous #4 is now owned by Robert J. Tomczak of Wauconda, IL.

Tomczak maintains a website, (http://4corvette.com), with the car’s history and extensive documentation.

Sponsored by Hendrick Motorsports, the Great Hall was created to give recognition to people, organizations and historic Corvettes that have shaped the Corvette phenomenon as we know it today.  For more information about the event please visit: http://issuu.com/goldreview/docs/blmgold_may2013/28
